The first thing you need to remember is that your newsletter is not about you, it’s about the person you are speaking to.
Your subscriber.
Why should they subscribe to and read your newsletter? What’s in it for them?
The point of your newsletter should always be to serve your audience, not talk about yourself.
(more on why people should subscribe here)
What should you talk about in your newsletter?
Anything you like, as long as it’s something valuable or interesting in your audience’s eyes.
I don’t (yet) have a magic formula for deciding on your newsletter content, but it needs to have the following ingredients:
content related to what you do as a business (obviously)
content that will entertain or educate your audience
a call to action
a red thread throughout different emails, keep it relevant
What newsletter format should you choose?
There are a few formats for newsletters you can choose from when you’re getting started:
Roundup: a summary of different resources and links on a topic or within a specific timeframe.
What happened this week in fashion
Sustainability in hospitality, top resources
Latest news on social media
Tips & recommendations: when sharing different types of tips and tricks, keep it seasonal or topical.
Prepare your pet for fireworks this autumn
Weekly organisation tip
This month’s bullet journal template
Hair styling tips for curly hair
Your latest blogs/videos/resources: if you have your own blog or videos that you regularly produce, you can share them with your email audience.
You can name the email after one of the blog topics or you can call it "Latest blog posts”
Progress update: this is a unique type of newsletter that allows you to talk about yourself more than usual, but it still needs to be a kind of progress update that’s interesting and relevant for the audience. (Lots of social media content is designed to follow someone’s journey for example)
Renovation update week 4
New product launch, 80% ready
Travel blog #6
This is not an extensive list by any means, you can make your email whatever you need it to be, just don’t overwhelm yourself when starting out.
